She was one of the first foreigners to be allowed into the Kingdom of Bhutan after it had been closed for two and a half years, and as an E.E. Ford Fellowship recipient, was one of the few Western journalists to enter China after the Tiananmen Square protests.

Before focusing on travel and writing full time, she worked in the music industry as a road manager and album cover designer for rock bands, in the film industry as a ghostwriter for A-List actors and special effects researcher for Lucas film, taught high school English and journalism, and raised a son.

So far, she has explored 55 countries, 6 continents, and all but one of the US states.
