Nikki Vargas, author of CALL YOU WHEN I LAND (HarperCollins, 2023), has earned the distinction of Glamour Magazine’s best women’s memoir for her bestselling book.

What’s your favorite destination and why?

I have many, but my favorite by far is Cartagena, Colombia. Being a Colombian immigrant, I’m biased, but Cartagena is a truly beautiful city and one that captures the essence of Colombian culture. I’ve been many times, and it never gets old.

How has travel impacted your life?

As I detail in my new travel memoir, CALL YOU WHEN I LAND, travel has been the one constant in my life, ultimately giving everything I most value—from my career to my husband to my friends to my pets!

What current project are you excited about sharing with the world right now?

My new book, CALL YOU WHEN I LAND, was just published by HarperCollins in November 2023. Since its release, my book has been named a best women’s memoir by Glamour Magazine, an AppleBooks staff pick, and a recommended read by Good Morning America, Cosmopolitan, Real Simple, Forbes, and more!

Nikki Vargas’ work has been featured in The New York Times, Good Morning America, CNN, Vogue, Cosmopolitan, The Daily Beast, The Washington Post, Forbes, and more.

What advice would you give to others who want to travel the world?

Travel hacks work! As a travel editor, I can say that we put in the work to arm our readers with all the advice necessary to make travel more affordable and accessible. Do your research and follow the tips, as you can save significantly on hotels, airfare, and other travel costs.

What drew you to the Women’s Travel Fest community?

Being a writer can be a lonely thing, especially when working remotely. What drew me to the Women’s Travel Fest community is how special it is to meet other like-minded women who are all bonded by a similar passion for travel. It’s immensely inspiring to meet women from all over who have managed to turn their love of travel into something creative or business-minded.

What’s your favorite memory of a past Women’s Travel Fest event?

I’ve had the joy of speaking at Women’s Travel Fest a few years in a row and have always found the event to be such a positive experience. All my Women’s Travel Fest memories are amazing, as it’s such a thrill to connect with other women in the travel space.

What’s your all-time must-have travel essential? Something you can’t travel without?

I like to always travel with a notebook. As a writer, I like to record my feelings and any observations as I move through the world, which is immensely helpful for any stories I end up writing later on.

And the last question – are you team carry-on or checked luggage?

Carry-on always!
