We sit down with Ashley Peterson, a full-time traveler and founder of Ashley Gets Around, to discuss her insights on travel and her memorable experiences with the conference.

At Women’s Travel Fest, we’re always in awe of the inspiring travel leaders who offer their experience, wisdom, and vast knowledge on how to create the life you want. This is why we’re honored to feature an amazing interview series on past and current speakers.

We were excited to speak to Ashley Peterson of Ashley Gets Around. She’s a full-time traveler and content creator who has visited over 90 countries on 6 continents.

Her popular Instagram account, Ashley Gets Around, is all about her travels and travel hacking. She owns and runs the only woman-owned subscription service for business-class flight deals and is the co-founder of a boutique tour company called Wild Air Travel

In the last 12 years, Ashley explored 98 countries across six continents.

What inspired you to start traveling?

Going to Epcot as a kid. Growing up, Disney was a huge trip for us. But I was always fascinated by maps, other countries, and history. I got the chance to go to Paris in college, and it was so magical that I was hooked.

What’s your favorite destination and why?

I can never get enough of Thailand. I love the people, the food, the cheap massages. Your travel budget goes insanely far there. Thailand was the first place I went on my 6-month backpacking trip, and last year, I actually launched my business from Thailand, so it’s pretty special to me.

How has travel impacted your life?

Travel has just changed my perspective on so many things. I have just learned so many incredible things from traveling.

What motivated you to pursue a career in travel?

Once I started traveling, all I wanted to do was travel. I would work jobs, save money, and then quit to go travel. All my favorite things involve travel in some way. I realized I was really good at travel hacking flights, so I started a business around helping other people fly cheap, too.

What current project are you excited about sharing with the world right now?

I just did my first conference a few weeks ago, the TravelMore Conference. I wasn’t sure if it would be an annual thing, but it’s coming back next year. I’m super excited to do it again in 2024, and I just started planning for it!

Ashley is a travel enthusiast, thriving when exploring foreign cities solo.

What advice would you give to others who want to travel the world?

Just do it. If no one wants to go with you, go alone. Join a group tour or go solo. The world is generally good. You won’t regret it!

What drew you to the Women’s Travel Fest community?

The supportive community and how nice everyone is. Even if you showed up knowing no one, there’s no way you would leave without making a new friend.

What’s your favorite memory of a past Women’s Travel Fest event?

Meeting Samantha Brown at this year’s event. She was one of the reasons I feel in love with travel!

What’s your all-time must-have travel essential? Something you can’t travel without?

Portal charger. I film content everywhere, so my phone dies often. And a travel extension cord so I can charge everything at once. Outlets are sometimes far away in hotel rooms, or you may only have one adapter. I use an extension cord with two outlets plus USB plugs. It’s a lifesaver!

And the last question – are you team carry-on or checked luggage?

In an ideal world, carry-on only! I did 6 months in 25 pounds in a backpack, and I am on a 4-week trip right now with just a carry-on. But on some trips, I end up checking a bag, so it depends on the trip!
